Gulper Catfish - (Asterophysus batrachus)
Fish Details, Description and Information Below:

🐟 Gulper Catfish — (Asterophysus batrachus)

The Gulper Catfish is a fascinating, oddball predator known for its astonishing ability to swallow prey nearly as large as itself — a talent that has earned it both its name and legendary status among monster fish keepers. Its huge head, massive mouth, and wide, stocky body give it a truly unique appearance, while its slow, deliberate movements make it mesmerizing to watch.

Native to the Orinoco and Rio Negro river basins in Venezuela, Colombia, and Brazil, the Gulper Catfish lurks in slow-moving waters, ambushing prey with incredible speed. This is not a community fish — anything that can fit in its mouth will disappear.

🌊 Tank Setup

  • 🏠 Tank Size: Minimum 75–100 gallons for a single adult.
  • 🪵 Provide driftwood, caves, or large pipes for hiding.
  • 💡 Dim lighting preferred — they are nocturnal by nature.
  • 💨 Moderate filtration with minimal strong currents suits them best.

🍽️ Diet

  • 🍖 Carnivore — prefers meaty foods.
  • 🐟 Whole fish, shrimp, tilapia fillets, and other protein-rich options.
  • 🚫 Avoid live feeder fish unless quarantined, as they can introduce disease.
  • ⚖️ Feed sparingly — they can go days without eating after a large meal.

⚖️ Temperament

  • 🦈 Solitary ambush predator — best kept alone or with tankmates too large to swallow.
  • 🤫 Peaceful toward non-edible companions but opportunistic.
  • 🕵️ Often shy in bright light, more active at dusk and nighttime.

🧠 Behavior & Care

  • 🛌 Spends much of the day resting in a cave or corner.
  • 💨 Can gulp air at the surface if oxygen levels are low.
  • 🧼 Hardy if water is kept clean — sensitive to high nitrates.
