The Tire Track Eel (Mastacembelus malabaricus) is a newly described species of spiny eel distinguished from the closely related Mastacembelus armatus. Native to freshwater rivers, lakes, and floodplains in South and Southeast Asia, this species features the iconic dark, maze-like “tire tread” markings along its elongated, light-colored body. While visually similar to other tire track eels, M. malabaricus is noted for differences in body proportions, scale counts, and patterning, making it a unique addition for serious eel enthusiasts.
