🐟 Redtail Catfish – (Phractocephalus hemioliopterus) – Massive Freshwater Predatory Catfish for Sale

The Redtail Catfish (Phractocephalus hemioliopterus) is one of the most recognizable freshwater giants in the aquarium hobby, known for its bold red tail, long whiskers, and powerful build. Native to the Amazon, Orinoco, and Essequibo River basins of South America, this species grows extremely large—often exceeding 4 feet (120 cm) in length—and requires enormous aquariums or private ponds.

While their appearance is captivating, Redtail Catfish are not suitable for the average home aquarium. They are predatory, produce large amounts of waste, and need thousands of gallons of water to live a healthy life.

🔎 Quick Facts – Redtail Catfish (Phractocephalus hemioliopterus)

  • 📛 Common Names: Redtail Catfish, RTC
  • 🔬 Scientific Name: Phractocephalus hemioliopterus

⚠️ Important Ethical Note

  • The Redtail Catfish is a fish that 99% of aquarists cannot house for life.
  • Keeping one in a 125–300 gallon tank is not adequate—they require ponds or aquariums exceeding 1,000+ gallons for proper long-term care.
  • Many end up stunted, rehomed, or surrendered because of space requirements.
  • The same applies to other giant species like Black Pacu, Tiger Shovelnose Catfish, and Piraiba Catfish.

  • 🐟 Territorial with other large bottom dwellers
  • 🪵 Intelligent and quickly learns feeding schedules
  • 🚫 Not compatible with small or delicate tankmates
