A Stunning, Prehistoric, Black-and-Gold Predator From the Congo Basin

The Ornate Bichir is one of the most visually impressive members of the Polypterus genus. With its striking maze-like pattern, dinosaur-like appearance, and calm but predatory behavior, it’s a favorite among monster fish keepers who want a hardy, intelligent, and long-lived display fish.

🔎 Quick Facts – Ornate Bichir

⚔️ Temperament & Behavior

🔥 Opportunistic Predator
Will eat any fish that fits in its mouth — surprisingly large prey included.

Tolerates similarly sized tankmates; rarely aggressive unless competing for food.

Most active at night; cruises along the bottom and mid-water.

Learns feeding times and recognizes keepers.

🏡 Tank Setup

🏞️ Tank Size

  • Single Adult: Minimum 90 gallons
  • Group / Tankmates: 125–150 gallons
    Long footprint > height.

🪨 Décor

  • Soft sand or smooth substrate
  • Driftwood, caves, large hides
  • Dim lighting or shadow zones
  • Open swimming lanes

They love “lurking” under wood and plants.

🔒 Secure Lid (VERY IMPORTANT)

Ornate bichirs are escape artists.

  • Airtight lid required
  • Cover ALL gaps
  • They surface for air and can launch themselves upward

💧 Filtration

  • Strong mechanical filtration
  • Moderate flow
  • Sumps or large canisters ideal
They are messy eaters and benefit from clean, oxygenated water.

🌡️ Water Parameters

  • Temp: 75–82°F (24–28°C)
  • pH: 6.2–7.8
  • Hardness: Soft–moderate
  • Oxygen: Good aeration is essential

🍽️ Diet

Carnivorous; thrives on meaty, high-protein foods.

🧆 Staple Foods

  • Sinking carnivore pellets (Massivore, Carnisticks)
  • High-protein sticks

🍤 Protein Foods (Favorites)

  • Shrimp
  • Tilapia fillets
  • Earthworms
  • Silversides
  • Krill
  • Mussels

❌ Avoid

  • Fatty meats (mammal/poultry)

👥 Tankmates

✔️ Suitable Partners

  • Other large bichirs
  • Arowana (size-matched)
  • Large peaceful cichlids
  • Clown loaches (large adults)
  • Silver dollars (large adults)

❌ Avoid

  • Small fish → Will be eaten
  • Fin-nippers
  • Hyper-aggressive predators

🧬 Sexing

  • Females: Broader, rounder body
  • Males: Thicker, more muscular anal fin
    Difficult to sex when young.

🐣 Breeding

Extremely rare in home aquariums.
Requires:

  • Huge tanks
  • Seasonal triggers
  • Often hormone-assisted in farms
Most are wild-caught or farm-raised under controlled conditions.
