Native to brackish and freshwater environments in Southeast Asia and Oceania, it is unique among morays for its ability to thrive in freshwater tanks, though it often prefers slightly brackish conditions.

This eel is an active nocturnal hunter with a curious nature but requires a secure, spacious aquarium due to its size and agility.
